Age Pension Eligibility
You can claim the Age Pension once you reach pension age (67) and meet the residency rules. Your payment depends on the income test and the assets test — Services Australia pays the lower result of the two.
Income Test
The maximum rate is paid while your income stays below the free area ($218 per fortnight for singles, $380 combined for couples). Above that, the pension reduces by 50 cents per dollar for singles and 25 cents per dollar each for couples.
Assets Test
Assessable assets (excluding your home) above the threshold reduce the pension by $3 per $1,000 per fortnight. Homeowners have lower thresholds ($321,500 single) than non-homeowners ($579,500 single).
