Who Gets Redundancy Pay?

Under the National Employment Standards, employees are entitled to redundancy pay when their role is made redundant and they have at least 1 year of continuous service. It applies at employers with 15 or more employees β€” most small businesses are exempt.

How Much Redundancy Pay?

Redundancy pay is based on a sliding scale of 4 to 16 weeks of base pay, depending on continuous service: 4 weeks after 1 year, 10 weeks after 5 years, 16 weeks after 9 years, then 12 weeks at 10+ years. The calculator applies the NES scale to your base weekly pay.

Is Redundancy Pay Taxed?

Genuine redundancy payments have a tax-free limit (roughly $13,598 plus $6,801 per completed year of service in 2026-27). Amounts above the limit are taxed as an Employment Termination Payment at concessional rates.
