What is the Skilled Migration Points Test?
Australia's points-based system scores skilled migration applicants for the SkillSelect EOI (Expression of Interest) used by the Subclass 189 (skilled independent), 190 (state nominated) and 491 (regional) visas. You need a minimum of 65 points to lodge an EOI, but reaching 65 does not guarantee an invitation — invite thresholds vary by occupation and invitation round.
How the Points System Works
The points test (in effect since 16 November 2019) awards points across 11 categories: age, English ability, skilled employment in Australia and overseas, education, Australian study, regional study, a specialist education qualification, a credentialed community language, partner skills, and state or regional nomination. Points by Category
Age scores highest at 25–32 (30 points). English at IELTS 8.0 or equivalent (Superior) earns 20 points, IELTS 7.0 (Proficient) 10 points. Skilled employment can be claimed for work in Australia (up to 20 points) and overseas (up to 15 points) in the last 10 years. Education ranges from 10 points for a diploma or trade to 20 for a doctorate. A partner with skills and English, or a single applicant, adds 10 points. State nomination (190) adds 5 and regional nomination (491) adds 15.
Minimum Points for Invitation
The 65-point minimum is set by the Department of Home Affairs. In practice, invitation scores for the 189 and 190 are often much higher — frequently above 80–90 points for competitive occupations. Use the calculator to see where you stand, then target the categories where you can gain more points.

How many points do I need for skilled migration?
A minimum of 65 points is required to lodge an EOI for subclass 189, 190 or 491. Invitation thresholds in each round are usually higher for competitive occupations.
How many points do I get for age?
25 points at 18–24, 30 points at 25–32, 25 points at 33–39, 15 points at 40–44 and 0 points at 45 and over. Age is assessed at the time of invitation.
How many points for English (IELTS)?
Competent English (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent) earns 0 points but meets the basic requirement. Proficient English (7.0) earns 10 points and Superior English (8.0) earns 20 points.
Can I claim both Australian and overseas work experience points?
Yes. Skilled employment in Australia (up to 20 points) and overseas (up to 15 points) are separate categories, and both can be claimed within the last 10 years.
Does my partner add points?
A single applicant earns 10 points. A partner with a skills assessment and competent English earns 10 points, a partner with competent English only earns 5, and a partner who is an Australian citizen or PR earns 10.
Do 65 points guarantee an invitation?
No. 65 points is the minimum to lodge an EOI. Invitations are issued in rounds based on occupation ceilings and available places, and competitive occupations often need 85–95+ points.
