What is the Census Date for Australian Universities?

Every university unit of study in Australia has a census date — the date when your enrolment is finalised and you become academically and financially liable. It is the last date you can withdraw from a unit without it affecting your grades or being charged for the unit. After the census date, withdrawing means a DF (Discontinue Fail) grade and ongoing financial liability.

For Commonwealth supported students, the census date is also the final day to submit your Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form, provide your Tax File Number, or pay your student contribution up front. If you do not, your enrolment in the unit will be cancelled.

How the Census Date is Calculated

Under the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA 2003) and the HES (Administration) Guidelines, a unit's census date must not be earlier than the first 20% of the period between the start and end of the unit. This calculator implements that minimum rule:

1. Count the total days from the unit start date to the unit end date.
2. Take the first 20% of that period (multiply by 0.2).
3. Round down to a whole number of days.
4. Add that many days to the start date.
5. If the result falls on a weekend, push it forward to the next Monday.

The result is the earliest permitted census date. Universities usually set their official census date at or after this point — always confirm the exact date on your university's website or key dates page.
