What is Casual Loading?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base rate to casual employees. It compensates them for not receiving paid annual leave, personal leave and other entitlements that permanent employees get. Instead of paid leave, casuals receive a higher hourly rate.

How the 25% Casual Loading Works

A casual employee's hourly rate is the base rate Γ— 1.25. For example, a base rate of $30 becomes a casual rate of $37.50. Enter the base hourly rate and typical weekly hours to see the loaded rate, weekly pay and the annualised amount (Γ— 52 weeks).

The 25% loading is the standard under most modern awards. Some awards or enterprise agreements set a different rate β€” always check the award that covers your job.

Casual vs Permanent

The 25% loading makes casual pay look higher per hour, but permanent employees receive paid annual leave, paid personal leave, redundancy protection and greater job security. Use the Wage Comparison calculator to compare total packages rather than just the hourly rate.

Super on Casual Loading

Superannuation guarantee (12%) is paid on the loaded casual rate β€” including the 25% loading. The old $450-per-month threshold was removed in July 2022, so super is paid from the first dollar for most casual workers.
